About the Award 

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission is pleased to offer awards for Australian students to complete a degree program in public policy at University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Known for developing compassionate leaders, advancing knowledge, and promoting innovation in policy and governance, the School provides an environment that supports interdisciplinary research and encourages efforts to champion the public good at local, national, and global levels. The Master of Public Policy (MPP) is a two-year professional degree designed to provide you with the skills, expertise and networks to identify problems and create the solutions.

Eligibility 

General Criteria  Award Specific Criteria 
  • Must be an Australian citizen. 
  • Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S. 
  • Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see link below). 
  • Must not have already commenced this degree or project in the U.S. 
  • Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences. 

 

 

 

  • Must include the University of Maryland in university preferences. 
  • Must hold an undergraduate degree.* 
  • Acceptance to the University of Maryland is not required at the time of application.**  

 

* Applicants may be in their final year of study if applying for a postgraduate degree award. Must complete their undergraduate degree before commencing their program. 

 

** Successful degree-seeking candidates must apply to the University of Maryland following notification from Fulbright regarding application success. 

 

Award Benefits 

  • Monthly stipend: for the duration of the program. 
  • Tuition fee: Tuition remission for up to ten (10) credits each semester in both fall and spring semesters for the admitted student. 
  • Graduate assistantship: A 10-hour/week graduate assistantship position.  
  • Travel stipend: round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution (capped at AUD$4,000). 
  • Settling-in allowance: USD$3,193 
  • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE): a limited Health Benefits Plan designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy. 
  • Orientation and Gala: travel, accommodation, transport and meals at the Fulbright Orientation and Gala Presentation Dinner. 
  • Visa: J1 visa (and J2 for traveling family members) organized by the Fulbright program.* 
  • Support and Guidance: from the Commission prior to and during program. 

 

*J2 visas are contingent on eligibility, including whether or not the dependent has held a previous J1/J2 visa and duration of stay with the awardee. Only spouses and children under 21 are eligible for J2 visas.
