About the Award 

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission awards up to six General Category Master’s degree awards annually. These awards are available in any discipline and sponsor research programs that enhance bilateral relations and embody the mission of the Fulbright program and Commission.

Eligibility 

General Criteria  Award Specific Criteria 
  • Must be an Australian citizen. 
  • Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S. 
  • Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see Eligibility and Conditions). 
  • Must not have already commenced this degree or project in the U.S. 
  • Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences.

  • Must hold an undergraduate degree.* 
  • Must not hold a Master’s or PhD degree already.
  • Acceptance to a U.S. institution is not required at the time of application.**  

  

* Applicants may be in their final year of study if applying for a postgraduate degree award. Must complete their undergraduate degree before commencing their program. 

** Successful degree-seeking candidates will work with the Institute of International Education’s placement services team to coordinate applications and negotiate fee reductions/waivers. Applicants must be willing to consider up to four institutions. 

  

  

Award Benefits 

  • Scholarship Award: valued at USD $75K for one-year Masters programs and USD $100K for two-year Masters programs. The award includes monthly stipend for the program duration; round-trip, economy class airfares directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution; baggage allowance; equipment allowance (where applicable); and tuition allowance.*  
  • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE): a limited Health Benefits Plan designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy. 
  • Orientation and Gala: travel, accommodation, transport and meals at the Fulbright Orientation and Gala Presentation Dinner. 
  • Visa: J1 visa (and J2 for travelling family members**) organised by the Fulbright program. 
  • Support and Guidance: from the Commission prior to and during program. 

*Fulbright Australia works with IIE to seek tuition waivers, which may be full or partial depending on the institution and strength of application. Awardees may be required to contribute personal funds to supplement the cost of their master’s program. 

**J2 visas are contingent on eligibility, including whether or not the dependent has held a previous J1/J2 visa and duration of stay with the awardee. Only spouses and children under 21 are eligible for J2 visas.
