About the Award

The Fulbright RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (funded by RMIT University) enables an exceptional postdoctoral candidate to undertake research in the United States. This award aims to solidify the relationship between RMIT and the U.S. host institution. 

The successful candidate will receive a 3-year Vice Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at RMIT which includes the Fulbright postdoctoral scholarship component of 3-10 months.

Eligibility

General Criteria

Must be an Australian citizen.
Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S.
Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see Eligibility and Conditions).
Must not have already commenced this project in the U.S.
Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences.
Must hold an undergraduate degree.

Award Criteria

Must have a letter of invitation from proposed host institution.
PhD must have been conferred within the past 5 years* at the time of application.
Must not hold a continuing academic appointment at RMIT.
If awarded, must commence fellowship at RMIT prior to departure for Fulbright program.
Applicants may be in their final year of their PhD research if applying for a postdoctoral award. PhD must be conferred before commencing program. Career breaks may be considered – please contact the Fulbright team via [email protected]

Benefits

Monthly Stipend:

For 4-10 months based on the current approved Monthly Maintenance Rate set by the U.S. Department of State.

International Travel Allowance:

round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution (capped at AUD$4,000).

Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE):

A limited Health Benefits Plan designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy.

Orientation and Gala:

Travel, accommodation, transport and meals at the Fulbright Orientation and Gala Presentation Dinner.

Visa:

J1 visa (and J2 for traveling family members*) organized by the Fulbright program.

Support and Guidance:

From the Commission prior to and during program.

RMIT Competitive Salary Package: 

3-year fixed term (in addition to stipend during the Fulbright scholarship period). 

RMIT Support:

Access to structured research training and mentoring support. 

RMIT Training:

Training: Access to Impact Awareness Training and Impact Pathway Planning. 

RMIT Team Project:

Focus on interdisciplinary team-based research projects. 
*J2 visas are contingent on eligibility, including whether or not the dependent has held a previous J1/J2 visa and duration of stay with the awardee. Only spouses and children under 21 are eligible for J2 visas.

Special Application Requirements

Applicants must provide a statement outlining how their research aligns with one or more of RMIT’s Strategic Research Priority Areas and which academic school best aligns with their research. 

Applicants do not need to have a current or past affiliation with RMIT.
