About the Award

The Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Agriculture and Life Sciences (funded by Kansas State University) is awarded to exceptional Australian professors to carry out research at Kansas State University (K-State) in the United States. 

Selected scholars will work with K-State faculty in priority research areas that lead to ongoing collaborative partnerships between Australia and K-State – partnerships which develop skills and capabilities in Agricultural and Life Sciences and which result in a stronger bilateral relationship between Australia and the United States. 

Awardees will be expected to contribute to guest lectures and seminars at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will conduct a public lecture tour across a variety of institutions whilst in-country.

Eligibility

General Criteria

Must be an Australian citizen.
Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S.
Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see Eligibility and Conditions).
Must not have already commenced this degree or project in the U.S.
Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences.
Must hold an undergraduate degree.

Award Criteria

Must have a letter of invitation from Kansas State University.

Must be at Full Professorial level in one of the following disciplines*:

  • Agriculture 
  • Human Ecology 
  • Veterinary Medicine 
  • Biology 
  • Biochemistry 
*Academics whose host is outside these areas might also be eligible depending on the research project being proposed. For example, working on biofuels in an engineering department, water issues in an engineering or geography department, or agricultural policy with a counterpart in the School of Leadership Studies or departments such as Politics and Economics could potentially be eligible

Benefits

Monthly stipend:

USD$6,700 for the duration of the program.

Accommodation:

provided by Kansas State University (valued at USD$2,000 per month).

International Travel allowance:

round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution (capped at AUD$4,000).

Domestic Conference Travel allowance:

USD$3,800.

Dependent Allowance:

USD$3,000 where dependents accompany the scholar for at least 80% of the program.

Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE):

a limited Health Benefits Plan designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy.

Orientation and Gala:

travel, accommodation, transport and meals at the Fulbright Orientation and Gala Presentation Dinner.

Visa:

J1 visa (and J2 for traveling family members*) organized by the Fulbright program.

Support and Guidance:

from the Commission prior to and during program.
*J2 visas are contingent on eligibility, including whether or not the dependent has held a previous J1/J2 visa and duration of stay with the awardee. Only spouses and children under 21 are eligible for J2 visas.

About the Sponsor

Kansas State University is a public university with three campuses located across the midwestern state. The oldest campus located in Manhattan, Kansas was founded in 1863, originally as an agriculturally focused college. Since then, Kansas State has expanded its higher education offering to research in service in various disciplines under the mission to “propel humanity”.
