My Fulbright research aims to use mom’s microbiome in pregnancy to predict and prevent preterm birth in babies at risk. This experience will equip me to develop and distribute accessible therapeutics with a global perspective, promoting international maternal and infant health throughout my scientific career.

Gwen Hummel is a PhD candidate at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, specialising in strategies to reduce and prevent preterm birth, the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide.

Gwen admires Australia’s approach to maternal and infant health, and as a Fulbright Scholar, she will collaborate with the University of Western Australia to explore how the maternal microbiome could be used to prevent preterm births.
