During this Fulbright project, I will learn from some of the most highly esteemed public health researchers globally to explore place-based methodologies to address society's biggest and most complex drivers of mental ill health. This knowledge will help guide future Australian mental health promotion efforts through ensuring strong and effective partnerships across community, research, policy, practitioner, and other settings.

Dr Erin Hoare is a public health researcher, psychologist, and recognized authority on issues related to equity, neurodiversity, and mental health. Erin has published more than 50 peer-reviewed publications including JAMA Psychiatry, Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, and Medical Journal of Australia. Her leadership roles have included Acting Director of a national mental health research institute focused on rural and regional mental health, NHMRC Early Career Fellow, and in 2025 she was awarded a Sir Winston Churchill Fellowship. She is an appointed member of the Victorian Government Our Equal State Reference Group, advising on matters related gender equality across the State. She was a former professional athlete across two national codes – netball and Australian-rules Football.

Working under the supervision of esteemed public health academic Professor Sandro Galea, Erin’s Fulbright will seek to establish best practice guidance on the development and delivery of place-based approaches to address some of the most challenging social drivers of mental ill health.
