My Fulbright project will explore the effects of environmental change and sea level rise on the stromatolites of Shark Bay through the lens of a trio of scientists—a paleontologist, an oceanographer and an astrobiologist—as well as the Malgana community, traditional custodians of Gathaagudu (Shark Bay).

Artis Henderson is a journalist and author whose work has appeared in major publications like The New York Times and Reader’s Digest. A certified master naturalist and diver, she writes at the intersection of conservation and humanity.

As a Fulbright-National Geographic Scholar, Artis will study the stromatolites of Shark Bay through the perspectives of scientists and Malgana elders. These ancient organisms, crucial to understanding early life, face threats from environmental change.
