East Asia Pacific Regional Travel Program

The Fulbright East Asia & Pacific Regional Travel Program, funded by the East Asia Pacific Fulbright Office at ECA enables current Fulbright U.S. Scholars to extend their research experience to other destinations in the East Asia Pacific (EAP) region

The awards offer local institutions, posts and commissions the opportunity to benefit from the academic and professional expertise of Fulbright U.S. Scholars based in another country within the EAP (Australia, Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam). Visiting Fulbright Scholars may wish to present lectures, present graduate or faculty seminars, undertake curriculum advising, public lectures and/or panel presentations.

U.S. Fulbright Scholars currently carrying out projects in the EAP region are eligible to receive funds to support short-term (3-14 days) travel to other EAP countries for activities such as lectures, workshops, graduate or faculty seminars, master classes or recitals, curricular advising, panel presentations, etc.

Australian institutions can also extend invitations to Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the EAP region in order to benefit from their academic and professional expertise during their Fulbright grant period. Eligible institution types include universities, non-profit organisations, government agencies, cultural and medical institutions, as well as research institutes and think tanks. The U.S. Scholar then applies for Regional Travel Program funding to cover international transportation (only) to pursue the invitation.

Check out our Current Scholars page for a list of Fulbright U.S. Scholars and the projects they are working on. For more information, contact our scholarships team via fulbright@fulbright.org.au. You can also see Past Recipients of Regional Travel Grants in the East Asia Pacific.

Closing dates: there is no specific closing date – U.S. Scholars can apply to their host country’s Fulbright office when in-country.

Please note:

  • Fulbright Australia cannot assist in setting up affiliations between U.S. Scholars and potential hosts.
  • Fulbright Australia cannot offer funding for accommodation or expenses – if required the U.S. Scholar should discuss this with their host.

Eligibility

  • US Fulbright Scholars may only apply for RTP funds when abroad during their Fulbright grant period.
  • Recipients of the Fulbright US Graduate awards (student researchers or English Teaching Assistants) are ineligible to apply for the RTP.

Entitlement

All Fulbright Scholars in RTP receive reimbursement for roundtrip, economy-class airfare to the host city in Australia.  Note that reimbursement of travel expenses will occur within four weeks of the Scholars’ submitting a travel report and proof of travel expenses incurred.

In addition, the host institution should provide (either through monetary or in-kind contributions):

  • Accommodation;
  • Meals; and
  • In-country transportation (i.e. travel to and from lodging and project activity site).

Award conditions

  • RTP funding covers transportation only.
  • The period of the award is 3-14 days.

Visiting U.S. Fulbright Scholars may wish to use some of their free time for research, cultural or other personal activities. However, such activities should not be the primary purpose of their travel, nor should they represent more than a small portion of their time spent in another country (e.g., one or two days before or after the main, expertise-sharing/collaborative activities take place).

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State (ECA) reserves the right to limit the number of visits to and from any country and to limit the visits of any one scholar in order to ensure usage throughout the region. An individual scholar is not likely to receive more than two grants from the Regional Travel Program in a given program year, although exceptions may be made.

  • Scholars must present a report within 30 days after their visit.
