Fulbright Future Scholarships (funded by The Kinghorn Foundation)


Thanks to generous support from The Kinghorn Foundation, the Fulbright Future Scholarships fund projects that seek to have a positive impact on the health, livelihoods and prosperity of Australians. We’re looking to support projects that seek to advance cutting-edge applied science, support the development of new or existing medical treatments or devices, kick start innovative business collaborations that foster the creation of new jobs or further the development of impact-driven emergent technologies.

Available awards:
  • Master’s degree-seeking candidates: 1-2 academic years.
  • PhD degree-seeking candidates: 4-5 academic years.
  • Visiting student researcher candidates: 4–10-month program.
  • Postdoctoral candidates: 4–8-month program.
  • Scholar candidates: 4-month program.

Eligibility

Specific to this award:
  • Must include an additional statement separate from their project statement (maximum of one page) that outlines the potential impact of their proposed program on the lives, health, livelihoods or prosperity of Australians.
General criteria for all Fulbright Awards:
  • Must be an Australian citizen.
  • Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S.
  • Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see link below).
  • Must not have already commenced this degree or project in the U.S.
  • Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences.
  • Must hold an undergraduate degree.*
  • Postdoctoral candidates only: PhD must have been conferred in the past 5 years.**
  • Postdoctoral and scholar applicants only: must hold a PhD.
  • Visiting student researcher, postdoctoral, and scholar applicants only: must have a letter of invitation from proposed host institution.
  • Degree-seeking applicants only: acceptance to a U.S. institution is not required at the time of application.***

* Applicants may be in their final year of study if applying for a postgraduate degree award. Must complete their undergraduate degree before commencing their program.
** Applicants may be in their final year of their PhD research if applying for a postdoctoral award. PhD must be conferred before commencing program.
*** Successful degree-seeking candidates will work with the Institute of International Education’s placement services team to coordinate applications and negotiate fee reductions/waivers. Applicants must be willing to consider up to four institutions.

Award Benefits

  • Monthly stipend for program duration for an individual based on the current approved MMR.
  • Tuition allowance (subject to funding availability, specified at time of offer)
  • Round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution (capped at AUD$4,000).
  • Settling-in allowance.
  • A limited Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) Health Benefits Plan, designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy.
  • Orientation and networking opportunities.
  • Support from the Commission prior to and during program.

The Impact Statement

To qualify for the Future Scholarships program, applicants should reflect on the potential impact of their proposed research/ study on Australia and Australians. Candidates are required to highlight this in their additional statement separate from their project statement.

‘Impact’ may be defined as;

  • Significant advancement of new technologies, techniques, or other novel research with potential for practical outcomes.
  • Tangible effect, benefit, or outcome for Australian society.
  • Creation of enduring bilateral commercial or research partnerships with potential for significant growth.
  • Novel approaches to medical treatment or rehabilitation.
  • Potential for job-creation.

Applicants are encouraged to consider both short-term and long-term impact, as relevant to their project or field.
